A Marinha de Guerra americana batizará um de seus navios com o nome de Harvey Milk, pioneiro da causa homossexual assassinado em 1978 em San Francisco. Harvey Milk é apelidado de "Martin Luther King gay" por seu papel de catalizador e organizador na luta contra as discriminações e pelo direito dos homossexuais de viver sua identidade publicamente.
Ele foi vivido por Sean Penn no filme "Milk, a voz da igualdade", que ganhou o Oscar de melhor ator em 2009.
"Posso confirmar que a Marinha informou ao Congresso sobre sua intenção de batizar um novo petroleiro reabastecedor de esquadra como USNS Harvey Milk", declarou uma fonte da instituição, confirmando informações do site USNI News.
O prefixo USNS significa que o navio pertence à Marinha americana, mas que se trata de um barco de apoio, dotado em geral de uma tripulação civil, em vez de um navio de combate.
Segundo o USNI News, site de informações marítimas, o atual secretário da Marinha, Ray Mabus, quer dar aos futuros petroleiros de reabastecimento os nomes de líderes dos direitos civis do país.
O primeiro barco desse tipo recebeu o nome de John Lewis, ex-companheiro de luta de Martin Luther King, que agora é representante do estado da Geórgia no Congresso americano.

He was played by Sean Penn in "Milk, the voice of equality," which won the best actor Oscar in 2009.
"I can confirm that the Navy notified Congress of its intent to baptize a new refueling tanker fleet as USNS Harvey Milk," said a source of the institution, confirming information USNI News website.
The USNS prefix means that the ship belongs to the US Navy, but it is a support boat, equipped in general a civilian crew, rather than a combat ship.
According to USNI News, site of maritime information, the current Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus, wants to give future tanker refueling the names of civil rights leaders in the country.
The first boat of this type is named after John Lewis, former teammate struggle of Martin Luther King, who is now Georgia's representative in the US Congress.
