Mas há uma polêmica que tem ocorrido fora do recinto da convenção e depois do final dos discursos: os prostitutos gay relatam um crescimento exponencial do negócio nos últimos dias, especialmente entre políticos casados. Vários trabalhadores do sexo falaram com o New York Post e denunciaram a situação, que não os espantou, uma vez que o Partido Republicano se opõe fortemente ao casamento entre pessoas do mesmo sexo. "O negócio está muito melhor. Num dia, chego a atender 10 clientes", conta um profissional do sexo, que afirma que o negócio tem florescido, em especial na zona próxima da Quick Loans Arena, onde decorre a convenção. A clientela é, na sua a maioria, homens entre os 40 e os 50 anos, casados. "Um deles era do Texas e acabou por confessar que era político e estava na convenção", conta um prostituto, que diz que está a faturar quase quatro vezes mais desde o início da Convenção Republicana. "Quando se trata de fazer coisas que não era suposto estarem a fazer, estão dispostos a pagar mais, até pelo silêncio. Há muitos republicanos que ainda não ‘saíram do armário’", comenta outro acompanhante. Por outro lado, as prostitutas de Cleveland não têm tido a mesma sorte e queixam-se que estão a se menos procuradas. "O negócio tem estado péssimo! Não tenho recebido nenhuma chamada", lamenta uma profissional do sexo.
