Ao receber o roteiro de "Novela das oito", primeiro longa-metragem de Odilon Rocha como diretor e roteirista, que estreia no próximo dia 30 nos cinemas, Mateus Solano se encantou com o texto e com a possibilidade de fazer um personagem dos tempos da ditadura, quando, segundo ele, a arte ocupava lugar "muito mais importante" que hoje em dia. Mas, curiosamente, em um filme no qual o drama dos personagens ofusca política e história, colocadas como pano de fundo, a cena em que o ator beija com paixão o estreante Paulo Lontra também pode ser encaixada, de certa forma, num contexto de ativismo social atual, em favor do fim do preconceito contra LGBTs.

"Gostei muito do resultado. Vi no próprio dia da gravação, é uma cena importante porque ainda é um tabu, e a gente estava preocupado como ficaria. É chiquérrima, mostra um tesão e um desejo que se vê em qualquer casal. Tem até uma masculinidade, uma pegada. São dois machos se pegando. Acho muito bonita", diz Solano.

Mateus interpreta João Paulo, um diplomata que volta ao Brasil em 1978, época do enfraquecimento da ditadura, e, apesar de casado, se envolve com o jovem Caio (Lontra). O estudante, que tem sua primeira experiência homossexual com João, mora com os avôs porque os pais, Dora (Claudia Ohana) e Vicente (Otto Jr.), são perseguidos pela ditadura.

Exilada em São Paulo, a amargurada e misteriosa Dora trabalha como empregada para a prostituta Amanda (Vanessa Giácomo), até que as duas se vêem obrigadas a fugir da polícia, liderada pelo determinado e violento Brandão (Alexandre Nero). A primeira decide, então, ir para o Rio de Janeiro, tentar impedir que Otto e seus companheiros comunistas sejam capturados. Assustada de ficar sozinha, e deslumbrada com a possibilidade de dançar a disco music na famosa boate Dancin' Days, no Morro da Urca, que inspirou a novela homônima de Gilberto Braga, a garota de programa segue a empregada até a Cidade Maravilhosa.
"Sempre vivi personagens muito ímpares na minha carreira. Fiz uma vaqueira, uma cangaceira, uma vampira... Todos personagens marcantes. Não tenho um histórico de personagens como uma mulher comum, uma mãe, como a Dora. Foi um desafio bacana", comenta Claudia, que chegou a frequentar o grupo Tortura Nunca Mais para entender o drama de quem sofreu com a violência policial durante a ditadura.
Formado em Londres, o brasileiro Odilon Rocha escreve e dirige um longa-metragem pela primeira vez. Sem conhecer os atores brasileiros, já que vive na Europa há anos, pesquisou e conversou com amigos até chegar na seleção de elenco. Sem muita bagagem, conquistou a equipe com o roteiro, premiado no Festival do Rio do ano passado, e com a humildade, segundo Mateus Solano.

"Odilon é um fofo, um querido. Deixou a gente sempre muito à vontade. Sabia onde que queria chegar, tem um futuro bem bacana pela frente. Ao mesmo tempo trabalhou com a humildade de alguém que estava pisando pela primeira vez naquele lugar", avalia o ator.

Claudia Ohana assina embaixo: "Ele desenha, faz storyboard, então ia gravar já sabendo o plano, chegava bem pronto no set. E é carinhosíssimo com o ator, suave, delicado. Teve uma estreia de garra, de coragem. É um filme de ação que não é de ação, um filme político que não é político, divertido sem ser comédia, de amor sem ser de amor... São seres humanos que se entrelaçam. É um filme ousado".
