BERLIM — O presidente da Bielorrússia, Alexander Lukashenko, criticou no domingo a noite a ameaça de líderes da União Europeia de aumentar as sanções contra o seu governo. O ministro do Exterior alemão, Guido Westerwelle, chamou Lukashenko recentemente de "o último ditador da Europa". Em resposta, o bielorrusso disse que "é melhor ser um ditador do que ser gay". Westewelle é o primeiro ministro alemão a reconhecer publicado sua orientação sexual.

"Quando escuto alguém que fala de ditadura, penso: é melhor ser um ditador do que ser um gay" disse Lukashenko, segundo a agência local Belta.

Essa, no entanto, não é a primeira vez que o presidente despreza LGBTs em público. Há cerca de um ano, Lukashenko disse "não gostar de gays".

Em relação às ameaças de novas sanções por parte da UE, Lukashenko se limitou a classificá-las como "histeria absoluta". Os líderes europeus concordaram na última sexta-feira com novas medidas para pressionar o regime bielorrusso após constatar os abusos de direitos humanos do governo de Lukashenko, no poder desde 1994.

In relation to the threats of new sanctions by the EU, Lukashenko merely classify them as "absolute hysteria." EU leaders agreed last Friday with new measures to push the Belarusian regime after noting the human rights abuses of the government of Lukashenko, in power since 1994.
