Um aumento no número de assassinatos de gays e emos têm preocupado estas comunidades no Iraque. De acordo com o Ministério do Interior 14 pessoas foram assassinadas nas últimas três semanas, entretanto ativistas de direitos humanos dizem que o número já chega perto de 100.

Os alvos dos ataques são gays e emos – grupo de pessoas que utilizam roupas mais ocidentais como calça mais justa, cabelo longo e preto.

De acordo com ativistas a maioria dos assassinatos tem ocorrido em bairros Xiitas, onde foram espalhados panfletos com ameaças contra 33 pessoas que seriam possivelmente gays ou emos.

O panfleto dizia que se se os “pervertidos” não pararem com seus “atos sujos” a ira de deus cairá sobre eles, através das mãos do grupo.

Os assassinatos começaram há aproximadamente um mês depois do Ministério do Interior divulgar um comunicado chamando emos de satânicos e que iria monitorá-los a fim de que fossem eliminados.

Uma polícia local foi criada com a finalidade de coibir o “fenômeno emo” através de ações que incluem a entrada em colégios para identificar suspeitos.

Um adolescente relatou a CNN, que assustado, tanto ele quanto os colegas, cortaram o cabelo e mudaram suas roupas, para não serem confundidos com emos ou gays.

The pamphlet said that if the "perverts" do not stop with their "dirty deeds" the wrath of God will fall upon them, through the hands of the group.

The killings began about a month after the Interior Ministry released a statement calling for emos and satanic that would monitor them so that they were eliminated.

A local police was created in order to curb the "emo phenomenon" through actions that include the entry into colleges to identify suspects.

A teenager told CNN that scared both he and his colleagues, cut their hair and changed his clothes, not to be confused with emos or gays.
