O governador de Nova Jersey, o republicano Chris Christie, vetou nesta sexta-feira o projeto de lei que autorizava o casamento entre pessoas do mesmo sexo no Estado, confirmando a expectativa de rejeição à proposta.
O matrimônio entre pessoas do mesmo sexo havia sido aprovado na quinta (16) na Assembleia de Nova Jersey, enquanto o Senado o ratificou na segunda (13). Com o veto, o projeto retorna aos legisladores, que deverão convocar um plebiscito.
A ideia da consulta é recusada pela oposição democrata, que considera a questão um problema de direito civil que não precisaria de votação pública. O Congresso estadual tem até 2014 para derrubar o veto, mas, para isso, precisarão da aprovação por dois terços dos votantes em ambas as casas.
Na segunda (13), Washington, no noroeste americano, passou ser o oitavo dos 50 Estados americanos a aprovar o matrimônio entre pessoas do mesmo sexo. A medida foi sancionada após ser aprovada pela Assembleia na última quarta-feira (8). A lei entrará em vigor em junho, após o prazo judicial requerido de 90 dias.
Os outros Estados onde o matrimônio igualitário é permitido são Nova York, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont e o Distrito de Columbia, onde está a capital Washington.

The governor of New Jersey, Republican Chris Christie on Friday vetoed a bill that authorizes marriage between same-sex couples in the state, confirming the expected rejection of the proposal.
A marriage between persons of the same sex had been approved on Thursday (16) in the Assembly of New Jersey, while the Senate ratified in the second (13). With the veto, the bill returns to the legislators, who shall hold a plebiscite.
The idea of the query is rejected by the opposition Democrats, who considers the issue a matter of civil law that would not require a public vote. The state Congress has until 2014 to overturn the ban, but to do so, will need approval by two thirds of those voting in both houses.
In the second (13), Washington, in the American Northwest, has to be the eighth of the 50 states to approve marriage between same sex. The measure was passed after being approved by the Assembly last Wednesday (8). The law takes effect in June, after the required legal time limit of 90 days.
The other states where equal marriage is allowed are New York, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and the District of Columbia, where the capital Washington.
