As celebridades que chegavam para a festa expressaram choque ao tomarem conhecimento da morte da cantora. Dezenas de jornalistas concentraram-se no hotel e no exterior os fãs juntaram-se, acendendo velas em sua memória e cantando as suas músicas.
Whitney Houston "foi identificada por amigos e família que estavam com ela no hotel", confirmou Mark Rosen, acrescentando que não há sinais de crime. A polícia de Los Angeles retirou o corpo da cantora pelas traseiras do hotel para evitar os jornalistas.
Neil Portnow, presidente da Recording Academy, organizadora dos Prémios Grammy, disse aos convidados na festa de Clive Davis que Jennifer Hudson vai cantar este noite na entrega dos prémios, em homenagem a Whitney Houston. "Faremos algo apropriado e nada será melhor do que ter Jennifer Hudson a cantar no palco por Whitney", disse Portnow. "Aqui costumamos celebrar... vamos celebrar Whitney Houston".
Houston, que tinha tinha 48 anos, alcançou fama planetária sobretudo por causa do filme “O Guarda-Costas” (1992), onde interpretou o papel de uma estrela do mundo da música e contracenou com Kevin Costner. A banda sonora do filme, cuja interpretação também esteve a seu cargo, foi distinguida com um Grammy, prémio que recebeu várias vezes.
