O primeiro-ministro da Austrália, Malcom Turnbull, afirmou nesta segunda-feira que convocará ainda este ano um referendo sobre a legalização do casamento entre pessoas do mesmo sexo, caso o seu partido vença as eleições legislativas.

As eleições acontecerão no dia 2 de julho, e as pesquisas mais recentes indicam um empate entre a coalizão conservadora no poder e a oposição trabalhista.

Turnbull, que é favorável ao casamento igualitário, prefere um referendo a uma votação no Parlamento.

Na Austrália é possível organizar referendos consultivos sobre temas de interesse nacional, sem consequências para a Constituição, para conhecer a opinião dos eleitores.

"Nossa política é muito clara: cada australiano deve votar sobre o tema" disse Turnbull, primeiro chefe de Governo em exercício a comparecer à tradicional Parada do Orgulho LGBT de Sydney.

"Se vencermos em 2 de julho, esperamos que o Parlamento vote rapidamente a favor de um referendo e que este seja organizado rapidamente" afirmou o político.

O Partido Trabalhista prometeu uma votação no Parlamento sobre a legalização do casamento entre pessoas do mesmo sexo nos primeiros 100 dias após a vitória.

Na Austrália, as uniões civis entre pessoas do mesmo sexo são legais em alguns estados, mas não são reconhecidas a nível federal.
