The Catholic Archbishop of Dublin ordered the expulsion of several students of the major seminary of Ireland, because of suspicions of widespread use of application Grindr mobile, dedicated to gay sexual encounters and also because of the failure of the school's responsibility to investigate the case, account Reuters on Tuesday. The episode is the latest scandal to hit the Catholic Church in Ireland, until recently seen as a decisive influence on public life, but now repeatedly humiliated by allegations of child sexual abuse that reveal decades of cover-up and complicity of church leaders. The Diarmuid Martin Archbishop says there are a number of anonymous complaints about a gay sex culture in Maynooth seminary, where more than 50 students are training to be priests, a situation aggravated by the failure of the college authorities to investigate the case. "One of the allegations is that there is a homosexual culture and students have been using an application called Grindr, which would be inappropriate for seminarians and not just because they are getting ready to be be celibate priests," said Martin in interview with the Irish public broadcaster RTE on Tuesday. "If this happens on a large scale in the seminar and the case has not been noticed in the seminary, then there's something wrong," said Diarmuid Martin. The Archbishop says there are also claims that students who made complaints to the authorities were expelled from the seminary. A number of allegations and counter-allegations poisoned the culture of the institution, he added. The president of the seminary, Hugh Connolly, defends himself by saying that no investigation had taken place because there had been no official complaint.
