Um casal gay na África do Sul teve trigêmeos biológicos que compartilham do DNA de ambos os pais. Acredita-se que eles são os primeiros do país – e do mundo – a terem essa quantidade de filhos usando uma barriga de aluguel.

Christo e Theo Menelou, pais das crianças, conhecerem a mulher que aceitou ser barriga de aluguel durante uma reunião de bairro realizada após o julgamento do ex-atleta paralímpico Oscar Pistorius, amigo do casal.

A inseminação ocorreu com o material biológico de ambos os pais. Dois óvulos foram fecundados, cada um com o esperma de um pai. Mas, dez semanas depois da gravidez, veio a surpresa: os médicos descobriram que um dos embriões havia se dividido e a mulher carregava trigêmeos – dois deles idênticos.

Para aumentar a chance de sucesso da gestação, os médicos aconselharam o aborto do embrião que se dividiu. Inconformados com o conselho, Christo e Theo procuraram outra ginecologista, que aceitou fazer o parto de todos os bebês. “Isso é extremamente raro”, disse Heidra Dahms, médica que fez o parto, à rede Sky News.

No dia 2 de julho, após 31 semanas de gestação, os trigêmeos Joshua, Zoe e Kate nasceram prematuramente. Eles precisaram ficar internados no hospital até ganhar peso, mas já tiveram alta.

Em casa, a nova família está se adaptando à rotina. Os bebês ainda têm a respiração monitorada. Nos próximos meses, um dos bebês precisará ser submetido a uma cirurgia cardíaca.

On July 2, after 31 weeks of gestation, Joshua triplets, Zoe and Kate were born prematurely. They had to be admitted to hospital to gain weight but have had high.
