Um grupo de estudiosos da conceituada Universidade Johns Hopkins, nos Estados Unidos, publicou uma nova pesquisa, defendendo que não há evidência científica suficiente para sugerir que uma pessoa nasça gay, lésbica ou transgênero. A chamada ‘identidade de gênero’ não é, portanto, uma questão biológica. O material está disponível na íntegra AQUI (em inglês).
O renomado Dr. Paul McHugh é um psiquiatra que estuda sexualidade há 40 anos. Ele comandou o grupo de pesquisa ao lado de Lawrence Mayer, professor de estatística e bioestatística na Universidade Estadual do Arizona. Sua pesquisa focou nas afirmações de que a orientação sexual e disforia de gênero sejam causadas por questões naturais.
Os pesquisadores contestam a alegação de que a discriminação e o preconceito social são os únicos motivadores do fato de pessoas com atração pelo mesmo sexo ou com identidade trans experimentem as maiores taxas de problemas de saúde mental.
Cérebros diferentes
Na primeira parte, o relatório argumenta que não há provas suficientes para afirmar que ser homossexual ou bissexual seja uma característica inata – algo que acompanhe alguém desde o nascimento. Foram levados em conta estudos anteriores sobre o tema – que tentaram fazer uma associação entre fatores genéticos e orientação sexual.
Contudo, o novo relatório aponta que nenhum desses estudos foi capaz de apresentar provas incontestáveis que existam “genes específicos” determinando essa questão.
“O estudo do cérebro de homossexuais e heterossexuais realmente possuem algumas diferenças, mas não há como provar que essas diferenças sejam inatas e não o resultado de fatores ambientais que influenciam traços psicológicos e neurobiológicos”, afirma o relatório.
“Um fator que parece estar correlacionado com a não-heterossexualidade é o abuso sexual na infância, algo que pode contribuir muito para essa tendência”.
Gêmeos mostram que DNA não é determinante
A pesquisa de McHugh e Meyer debruçou-se sobre estudos da sexualidade de irmãos gêmeos. Um deles conduzido em 2010 pelo epidemiologista psiquiátrico Niklas Langstrom e seus colegas. Foram analisados 3.826 gêmeos univitelinos (idênticos) e bivitelinos (fraternos) do mesmo sexo. Como se sabe, os univitelinos são fecundados por um único óvulo e um único espermatozoide, portanto possuem o mesmo DNA.
Dentre os casos onde um dos gêmeos afirmava sentir atração por pessoas do mesmo sexo, apenas em uma pequena fração ambos eram homossexuais. A chamada “taxa de concordância” foi de 18% de gêmeos univitelinos do sexo masculino e 11% para os gêmeos bivitelinos, enquanto eram 22% das fêmeas idênticas, e 17% das gêmeas fraternas.
“Após uma avaliação detalhada desses estudos de gêmeos, podemos dizer que não existe nenhuma evidência científica confiável que a orientação sexual seja determinada pelos genes de uma pessoa. Mesmo assim, há evidências que os genes desempenham alguma influência na orientação sexual”, explica o relatório.
A partir disso, cabe a pergunta: Será que as pessoas homossexuais nasceram assim? Os pesquisadores dizem não existir evidências científicas que a orientação sexual seja determinada geneticamente. Contudo, certos perfis genéticos provavelmente contribuem para que a pessoa mais tarde se identifique como gay, afirma o material divulgado.
Estudos prévios foram inconclusivos
A parte final do longo estudo contrasta uma série de outras pesquisas que tentaram mostrar as ligações entre a ‘identidade transgênero’ e diferenças neurológicas. De fato, alguns desses estudos prévios mostravam que os padrões de ativação cerebral diferem entre as pessoas que se identificam como membros do sexo biológico oposto.
Para os pesquisadores da Universidade Johns Hopkins “ele não ofereceram provas suficientes para se obter conclusões sólidas das possíveis associações entre a ativação do cérebro e a identidade sexual. Seus resultados são conflitantes e confusos”.
“As diferenças neurológicas em adultos transgêneros podem ser resultado de fatores biológicos, tais como genes ou exposição hormonal pré-natal; de fatores psicológicos e ambientais, como abuso infantil, ou mesmo o resultado de uma combinação de ambos”, assegura o relatório.
O The Christian Post perguntou ao doutor Lawrence Mayer sobre as críticas recebidas por ele de movimentos LGBT que podem discordar de certos aspectos do seu relatório. Ele esclarece que não há motivação religiosa na pesquisa e tampouco preconceito.
“Cada linha foi escrita ou aprovada por mim. Não há nenhum tipo de tendência, revelamos apenas o que a ciência mostra.”
Ele confessa que grupos conservadores têm feito pesadas críticas ao relatório porque não os apoia integralmente. “Vamos deixar a ciência falar por si só”, encerrou.

Twins show that DNA is not decisive
The survey of McHugh and Meyer has focused on studies of sexuality of twins. One conducted in 2010 by the psychiatric epidemiologist Niklas Langstrom and colleagues. They analyzed 3,826 monozygotic twins (identical) and dizygotic (fraternal) of the same sex. As is known, the monozygotic are fertilized by one egg and one sperm, so have the same DNA.
Among the cases where one of the twins claimed to be attracted to people of the same sex, only a small fraction were both gay. The so-called "concordance rate" was 18% of monozygotic twins were male and 11% for dizygotic twins, as were 22% of identical female, and 17% of fraternal twins.
