Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory) e Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights) se juntaram a Julia Roberts, Mark Ruffalo e Matt Bomer para estrelar o filme para a televisão. Parsons interpretará o ativista gay Tommy Boatwright, repetindo seu papel no teatro da versão que esteve em cartaz na Broadway em 2011; Kitsch interpretará Bruce Niles, um banqueiro e gay não assumido que, mais tarde, acaba se tornando um ativista na luta contra a AIDS.

O longa, inspirado na peça de Larry Kramer, ganhadora do prêmio Tony, narrará o auge da epidemia de AIDS na cidade de Nova York no início dos anos 80. Kramer's play premiered at New York's Public Theatre in 1985. The version of 2011, which debuted on Broadway, won the Tony for Best Revival, Best Actor and Best Actress. Tony is considered the biggest prize of the theater. The Normal Heart will begin production later this year and will debut on HBO in 2014.
