ROMA — Organizações de defesa dos diretos LGBT e outros ativistas criticam duramente a decisão do Parlamento da Itália de vetar um projeto de lei anti-homofobia que aplicaria sentenças mais duras para envolvidos em crimes de violência contra lésbicas, gays, bissexuais, travestis e transexuais.

A Casa Baixa do Parlamento italiano, dominada pelo partido conservador do primeiro-ministro Silvio Berlusconi rejeitou a proposta no fim desta terça-feira. O argumento dos legisladores foi que LGBTs devem ser tratados como qualquer outro cidadão.

A Anistia Internacional disse que a Itália perdeu uma 'importante oportunidade'. Roberto Stocco, da Associação de Gays e Lésbicas da Itália (Arcigay), criticou os parlamentares e disse que eles temem que a Lei possa abrir as portas para novos diretos LGBTs, incluindo o casamento civil.

The Lower House of the Italian Parliament, dominated by the Conservative Party of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi rejected the proposal at the end of Tuesday. The argument of legislators was that LGBT people should be treated like any other citizen.

Amnesty International said that Italy has lost a 'great opportunity'. Roberto Stocco, the Association of Gays and Lesbians Italy (Arcigay), and criticized lawmakers said they fear the law could open the door to new direct LGBT people, including civil marriage.
