De acordo com o San Francisco Chronicle C.W. Nevius, o guarda disse que as mulheres não tinham permissão para ficar de mãos dadas no museu. Quando elas começaram a questionar o porque com o guarda, ele tentou colocar-las para fora. O casal se recusou e pediu para ver o chefe da segurança, enquanto uma multidão de pessoas indignadas assistia a briga.
