Malafaia diz que o Brasil não é homofóbico e ataca PLC 122 ( Noticia ) - Malafaia says that Brazil is not homophobic attacks and 122 PLC (News)
Agora, olhe a diferença.
In an interview to Veja, the evangelical pastor and an enemy of LGBT citizens, Silas Malafaia, said that Brazil is not homophobic and that the law criminalizing homophobia is the "law of privilege."
"His performance against the bill criminalizing homophobia debate in Congress was blunt. But influence on laws is part of a religious?
If it were not so, the house had fallen. This law is the law of privilege. Brazil is not homophobic. Well I separate homosexuals from gay activists. The latter want Brazil to be homophobic to suck money from the government, the state is their little game. Homophobia is a disease. Hatred of homosexuals, want to kill them or beating them is a disease. Now, opinion is not homophobia. The bill says that if a homosexual feel embarrassed through the Internet, a communication vehicle, jail the guy who embarrassed. Exactly what the law provides for racism. Now, look at the difference. You were born with their race. Do not choose. The Homosexuality is behavior. I see no logic in a law to criminalize those who assaults a homosexual in a straight punch as it hurts the same way. The law they are proposing is a gag rule. If we learn to respect freedom of expression, it is better to have to close the account balance. "
Well, it looks really tiring and boring to refute the fallacies of Malafaia, but there are things that need direct questions:
Malafaia, how can a law be privileged if it is inclusive of all sexual orientations? The PLC 122 is known as the law against homophobia, because, of course are the homosexuals who are most discriminated against for their guidance, but it is important to remember that the project criminalizes sexual orientation discrimination. So where is the privilege, Malafaia? Does the LGBT start earning discounts in theaters? Queues have preferred? Or fail to pay taxes for it?
Another thing. You, Malafaia, suggests that LGBT activists want Brazil to be homophobic? Brazil is the country that more than 75 denies rights to homosexuals. This is where one is gay murder victim almost every day. This is where father and son confused with homosexuals are beaten. That's where reports of homophobia in schools is becoming more frequent. This is where a president vetoes a program of education against homophobia without even having read not to advertise 'sexual preferences'. This is where pastors insist on comparing homosexuality to pedophilia even though the highest rate of child abuse is committed by heterosexual men.
Lack of information looks bad, pastor. Law puts no one in jail without trial. You well know that. Even with the approval of No. 122 there will be a trial of the case and found homophobia, then it's worth there, like any other law. So if you're not a homophobe, because fear?
Also, if you do not know (which I doubt) homophobia is not only killing or harming yourself as exemplified. But the injury is the denial of access (when access is given to other citizens), the denial of rights, and violation of human dignity.
Finally, it was not the first time you said that homosexuality is behavioral. In their nonsense about a sexuality which does not experience, swears that homosexuals "choose" for this behavior. So I have a challenge: PROVE! Prove that different sexualities are unnatural, prove that in nature there is no such "behavior", prove that homosexuals choose to be targets of teasing, humiliated, beaten, killed, on a whim, for a lifestyle. Prove it! For even know where diversity is present in all of human life, from our physical characteristics, even in the way we inter-relate. Prove that is not natural to be different.
The pastor is a hint: Be more concerned in taking care of their flock, and prosecute irregularities of their own names as the numerous processes that politicians linked to his church suffer in justice. Take care to fight evil (and yes this unnatural and behavioral) of corruption in the name of faith. For if the intention of breastfeeding advocates in government is as you say, the Lord is to suck the teats of the ignorance of people in this country.
Note: It is curious how some journalists show about doing an interview unprepared. In this case, the journalist does not lend itself to at least one analysis, or even more probing questions about issues raised by Malafaia. It is a passivity in the face of questions as meaningless as this interviewee relationship on behavior x odd nature that leads us to two conclusions: Either the journalist is unprepared, or condone the speech of the interview.

Within a universe of more than 500 000 professional footballers in the world, LGBT made are rare. The commonplace fans tend to blame, but a poll published on Thursday (31) contradicts this alleged homophobia. The study in the UK and published by the "British Journal of Sociology" who pointed out that prevents players from moving out of the closet are, in fact, businesses and clubs, who fear that the image of the athlete is impaired.
The fans, the survey found, are more concerned with what the player does on the pitch than he does behind closed doors. About 3,500 fans were interviewed, and 93% said they are against homophobia and they support openly gay players.
It is noteworthy that the research was based in the UK. Although there are 35 different nationalities interviewed, 85% of them cheer for British clubs. In all, 83% of participants are male.
"The fans blame entrepreneurs who are afraid of losing their committees and clubs conservatives who wish to maintain the status quo. It is the market that controls football banning gay players to leave the closet, "concluded the author Jamie Cleland of the University of Staffordshire.

First marriage between lesbians in Uberaba, MG, will be held this month (News)

The books of the Civil Registry Office of Uberaba never officiated a marriage between women. But the documentation has been analyzed. "It's a normal marriage, where two people will do the same process that makes any other marriage: property regime, adopted names, all normal as any other process," explained the clerk Maria de Fatima Macedo.
The Proclaim has also been published in the Official Gazette of Uberaba. "We had the guidance that was to be done the forwarding of documentation and presentation to the judge in an orderly process for the approval or not. The Secretariat is responsible to fulfill what has been defined by the courts. Our role is not to discriminate against anyone, but realize what is right, "said Secretary of Social Development, Susana Faria Eide. Also according to her, the procedure for participation of both was the same for heterosexual couples.

Tribunal julga inconstitucional lei anticasamento igualitário nos EUA ( Noticia ) - Court considers the law unconstitutional anticasamento equal in the U.S. (News).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A federal court in Boston has an important decision with regard to marriage between same sex, judging unconstitutional the Doma (Defense of Marriage Act), a 1996 law that states that marriage can only be between a man and a woman. The decision has no immediate effect because it anticipates a feature that will be decided only in the United States Supreme Court, but it is the first time an appeals court declared the law unconstitutional.
"Today's decision is a landmark and makes it clear once again that the Dome is a discriminatory law, for which there is no justification," he said in a statement Martha Coakley, Attorney General of Massachusetts. It was under the direction of Martha, that Massachusetts became the first state in 2009, claiming the unconstitutionality of the law formally.
In 2010, a federal judge in Massachusetts ruled that the Doma violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution by denying benefits to a class of couples - the gay and lesbian. On Thursday, the appeals court in Boston agreed with the decision of Massachusetts, asserting that the law interferes with the right of a state to define marriage. The benefits denied to couples, including the right to submit joint tax returns, can reduce the payments over the life and ability to collect benefits after the death of a party.
The Federal Court of Justice in Boston treated the question of strict federal benefits to same-sex couples, not the legality of marriage itself. Still, it was considered a great achievement for the LGBT movement.
"For us, today is a great day. We look forward to the next round," said Mary L. Bonauto, who championed the cause for the company and Advocacy for LGBT advocates.
Proponents of the law, however, expect the Supreme Court set aside the appeal court. "Society must protect and strengthen marriage, not weaken it," said Dale Schowengerdt, a lawyer for Alliance Defense Fund, a group of Christian lawyers.
Since the Dome was created, eight states plus the District of Columbia, approved the egalitarian marriage: Connecticut, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont and Washington. The new law has not yet entered into force in Maryland and Washington.

Dupla maternidade é autorizada pela Justiça de São Paulo ( Noticia ) - Double motherhood is authorized by the Justice of São Paulo (News)

The Justice Jacareí welcomed on Tuesday, 29, asked two women to child generated by in vitro fertilization can be recorded with "dual motherhood."
The applicants are married and formally submitted to the procedure in which eggs were collected from both. They were fertilized by donated sperm, and then formed embryos transferred to the uterus of one of them. The embryos were chosen by doctors because of the greater viability of the pregnancy, regardless of which of the two came from.
Given the peculiarity of the case, the official Civil Registry and Natural Persons and prohibitions and Guardianships Jacareí consulted permanent judge of the district magistrate, Fernando Henrique Pinto on the transcription of the record of birth of the child.
According to the magistrate, with the legal feasibility of a stable union and civil marriage between same sex, and being common to use techniques of assisted reproduction for heterosexual couples, "nothing prevents - or can prevent, under penalty of violation of the principles constitutional - that the applicants civilly married, have access and make use of the same scientific techniques to produce desired offspring. "
Cardoso also mentions that other court decisions have recognized the "dual motherhood" and stresses that if there is novelty in this case would be the origin recognition by the Civil Registry of Natural Persons, without the need for the adoption process. The decision also stipulates the completion of the registration of birth of the child, to appear as mothers, both the woman who produced it as the spouse of the pregnant woman.

The protesters demanded the right to make stops LGBT Pride, which are not allowed by the authorities. Almost all the 30 LGBT rights activists who protested were arrested, while the number of prisoners among the 50 was far less orthodox.
Nikolai Alexeyev, leader of the protest, said he had been arrested for talking to reporters.
"All our rights are ignored here in Russia. Our rights are not secure and we are not physically secure," said Igor Yasin, one of the protesters.
This year the Russians sent lawmakers a federal law to Parliament to impose fines on those who promote "positive propaganda LGBT" among minors, as already happens in St. Petersburg.
Homosexuality, punishable by imprisonment in the Soviet Union, was decriminalized in Russia in 1993, but the prejudice against LGBT people in the country continues.

Earlier this month, a commission related to the indication of the FDA recommended the drug, a combination of tenofovir with emtricitabine in preventing AIDS. If the recommendation being accepted by the agency, persons not infected theoretically could have sex without a condom with HIV-positive.
This does not mean, however, that the drug will automatically be used in Brazil for the treatment of patients with HIV or indicated before unprotected sex with HIV positive partners or HIV status unknown.
The Department of Viral Hepatitis STD and AIDS of the Ministry of Health said that the record of ANVISA will not change at the moment, Brazil's strategy to combat the disease. Although some studies show that the drug exerts a protective role, is not yet clear to the department as it would apply in a public health action.

Israelenses eliminam células com HIV sem atingir as saudáveis ( Noticia ) - Israeli eliminate cells with HIV without affecting the healthy (News)

Comissão do Senado aprova união estável entre pessoas do mesmo sexo ( Noticia ) - Senate committee approves a stable union between same sex (News)

The Human Rights Committee of the Senate approved on Thursday (24) bill that includes the Civil Code, the stable union between same sex and marriage in their future conversion. The proposal becomes law in a decision taken unanimously by the Supreme Court (STF) in May 2011, when the stable homoafetiva recognized as a family unit.
The proposal, by Senator Suplicy (PT-SP), you still have to go through the Committee on Constitution and Justice (CCJ) before going to the floor and will also have to be voted by the House of Representatives, where it will face much more resistance than the Senate, especially by the so-called evangelical bench.
In its report on the bill, Senator Lidice da Mata (PSB-BA) supported the proposal noting that Congress is delayed not only in relation to the Supreme Court, and in relation to the IRS and Social Security, which already recognize same-sex couples in their standards. Senator cautions, however, that the conversion of a stable union in marriage has nothing to do with religious marriage.
"The project has only about civil marriage and stable, without any impact on the religious marriage. Thus, it does not hurt in any way the freedom of religious organization nor the belief of any person, while ensuring, on the other hand, that one's faith does not overlap the personal freedom of others, "he noted in his report.
Despite the decision of the Supreme Court, which serves as a case for the other court levels, homosexual couples have had difficulty in obtaining justice in the conversion, even in big cities like Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Several judges argue, despite the decision of the superior body, there is no such legislation. During the vote on the Supreme Court, the then President of the Court, Minister Cezar Peluso, urged the Congress to "take the task that until now did not feel inclined to do" and transform the conversion into law.

Abaixo-assinado nos EUA pede que dicionário mude definição de 'casamento' e inclua LGBTs ( Noticia ) - Petition asks the U.S. to change dictionary definition of 'marriage' and include LGBT (News)

Amid the intensifying debate over the legalization of civil unions between same-sex couples in the U.S., an activist in the state of New Hampshire decided to fight for a small change can sow gestures of tolerance and acceptance.
With the help of the site change.org, a social network that gathers petitions from various social movements, Mike Raven devised to try to convince a petition to modify the dictionary definition of the entry for "marriage."
In the letter accompanying the virtual document, it is justified and says, "if all arguments [opposing] arise from an intangible definition of marriage, then it is time to change that definition." Because "while there is no changing the way discriminatory and oppressive with which some religions continue to define marriage, we can use an even better place: the dictionaries. "
The idea came when Raven was faced with the frustrations experienced by her twin sister, a lesbian activist who was angry with the news that the Executive of the State of North Carolina had vetoed the law that allowed the egalitarian marriage.
Its main target is the site Dictionary.com, whose monthly audience exceeds the mark of 50 million readers. There, the definition for the entry for "marriage" is limited to "social institution on which a man and a woman establish their decision to live as husband and wife."
Raven's suggestion that this definition is to become "the entry of two consensual adults in a long term relationship as husband and wife, husband and husband or wife and wife, based on love and commitment."
In a statement to the Huffington Post website, the Dictionary.com recalled that the second definition for the entry, there is a concession to the union of the same gender. However, for Raven, this is not enough because, for him, this design is "separate but the same." The dictionary did not give predictions about when modify its definition.
The egalitarian marriage is not recognized nationally. Still, six states and the District of Columbia have passed laws authorizing regulations of equality in civil unions. Meanwhile, Raven already has seven thousand signatures for a goal of ten thousand.

Corte da Colômbia garante a gay direito de adotar duas crianças ( Noticia ) - Court of Colombia guarantees the gay right to adopt two children (News)

The Constitutional Court of Colombia guaranteed the right of a gay American journalist to adopt two children, after the local institute that deals with the rights of minors to deny him custody, arguing risk to children. For cutting, the sexual orientation of the U.S. does not affect the adoption process, nor is it a threat to children's rights.Earlier on Wednesday, former columnist for "New York Times," Chandler Burr reported on a CNN television his via crucis to get their children back. The story began in the summer of 2009, when children spent five weeks with Burr in New York. In March 2010, the journalist began the process of formal adoption of two boys - now with 9 and 13 years - through the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare (ICBF). It was only a year later, in March 2011 that the problems started.
According to Burr, after mentioning his sexuality in an informal conversation, a lawyer who represents the ICBF took care of their children and asked them about it, before notifying the Burr that he could not get them back to the U.S..
In an interview with Colombian radio, the new director of ICBF, Diego Molano, defended the decision and said that the institute has "the right to know who the father is." Also according Molando, Burr had hidden important information, not disclosing their sexual orientation.
The Colombian judges considered that the separation of the affected children and Burr and complained that the institute has not taken into consideration the opinion of the minors concerned, who wanted to stay with his adoptive father.

Jovem que gravou relação sexual de colega gay é condenado nos EUA ( Noticia ) - Young who recorded a fellow gay sex is condemned in the U.S. (News)

Dharun Ravi took 30 days in jail and three years of probation. He has released video that Tyler Clementi, 18, committed suicide in 2010.
A New Jersey court ruled on Monday (21) the young student who taped his roommate having sex with another man, an attitude that resulted in suicide even after its disclosure on the Internet, with a penalty of 30 days prison and three years of probation.
The young Dharun Ravi, of Indian origin, you could take ten years in prison and up to be deported back to their country because of the suicide of Tyler Clementi, his roommate at Rutgers University. However, Judge Glenn Berman limited his sentence to 30 days imprisonment and also did not order his deportation.
Clementi was 18 when she committed suicide by leaping from the George Washington Bridge, linking New York and New Jersey, in September 2010. The young man decided to commit suicide after discovering it had been written by Ravi having sex with another man, besides the fact that the images have ended up on the Internet.
Before a packed court, the mother of the young girl, named Jane Clementi said that the only thing she expected was still 'justice', considering the attitude of Ravi for 'wicked and malicious'. Jane said that 'behavior is unacceptable "and, therefore, asked the judge not tolerate that kind of attitude.
The magistrate, who said he would not recommend the deportation of the accused, Ravi sentenced to 300 hours of community service, an extensive medical treatment and to pay a fine of $ 10,000, which will be for an organization that provides assistance to victims of harassment.
In March, the jury had declared Ravi guilty of various offenses, such as invasion of privacy and intimidation.
The case Clementi, who was also involved another student, caused consternation in the U.S. LGBT community, which, in turn, denounced the harassment that resulted in the suicide of at least four young people in the states of Indiana, California, Texas and New Jersey.
After the suicides, the White House was forced to address the issue, and the U.S. president, Barack Obama recorded a message to request an end to this harassment. 'I cut out the heart, "Obama pointed out then, which recognized that' it is difficult to 'grow up in a place where you do not feel belonged.
The harassment at school, better known as 'bullying' is a practice that is the target of numerous awareness campaigns within American society.

A terapia reparativa
Jack Drescher, psiquiatra em Nova York e coeditor de “Ex-Gay Research: Analyzing the Spitzer Study and Its Relation to Science, Religion, Politics, and Culture”.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The fact was simply that he did everything wrong, and at the end of a long revolutionary career, no matter how often he was right, how powerful was or what it would mean to his legacy.
The dr. Robert L. Spitzer, considered by some as the father of modern psychiatry, who turns 80 this week, recently agreed to 4 am aware that I had to do something that is not natural to him.
He struggled and went stumbling in the dark. His desk seemed impossibly distant, Spitzer suffers from Parkinson's disease and has difficulty walking, sitting and even hold her head up.
The word he sometimes uses to describe these limitations-pathetic-is the same as that used for decades as an ax to attack silly ideas, theories and studies empty worthless.
Now here he was at his computer, ready to recant a study that conducted an investigation of ill-conceived 2003 that supported the use of so-called reparative therapy to "cure" homosexuality, is for people strongly motivated to change.
What to say? The issue of marriage between same sex was shaking again the national policy. The California Legislature was debating a bill prohibiting the therapy as being dangerous. A magazine journalist who underwent therapy in adolescence, recently visited him at his home to explain how miserably was a disorienting experience.
He subsequently learned that a report of the World Health Organization, released on Thursday (17), considers therapy "a serious threat to health and well-being-even life-affected people."
Spitzer's fingers trembled on the keys, not reliable, as if suffocated with words. And then it was done: a brief letter to be published this month in the same journal where the original study appeared.
"I believe I must apologize to the gay community," concludes the text.
Disturbing the peace
The idea of studying the entire reparative therapy was Spitzer, say those who know him, an effort of an orthodoxy that he helped establish.
In the late '90s as today, the psychiatric establishment considered worthless therapy. Few therapists considered homosexuality a disorder.
It was not always so. Until the 70s, the diagnostic manual of the field classified homosexuality as a disease, calling it "sociopathic personality disorder." Many therapists offer treatment, including Freudian analysts who dominated the field at the time.
LGBT activists have objected furiously and, in 1970, one year after the Stonewall protests to stop the raids in a bar in New York, a group of LGBT rights protesters confronted a gathering of behavior therapists in New York to discuss the matter. The meeting was closed, but not before a young professor at Columbia University sit with the protesters to hear their arguments.
"I've always been attracted to controversy and what I heard made sense," Spitzer said in an interview at his home last week. "And I started thinking, well, it is a mental disorder, then what makes it so?"
He likened homosexuality to other conditions, defined as disorders such as depression and alcohol dependence, and saw immediately that caused the last severe distress and damage, while homosexuality is not often.
He also saw an opportunity to do something about it. Spitzer was then a member of a committee of the American Psychiatric Association, which was helping to update the diagnostic manual of the area, and promptly organized a symposium to discuss the place of homosexuality.
The move triggered a series of bitter debate, putting Spitzer against two major influential psychiatrists who do not relent. In the end, the psychiatric association stood by Spitzer in 1973, decided to remove homosexuality from its manual and replace it with the alternative of him, "disorder of sexual orientation" to identify people whose sexual orientation, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transvestite, transsexual or straight, caused them distress.
Despite the arcane language, homosexuality was no longer a "disorder". Spitzer has achieved a breakthrough in civil rights in record time.
"I would not say that Robert Spitzer became a popular name among the broader LGBT movement, but the removal of homosexuality was widely celebrated as a victory," said Ronald Bayer, the Center for History and Ethics of Public Health at Columbia. "'No More Sick" was the headline in some newspapers gay. "
Partly as a result, Spitzer charged with the task of updating the diagnostic manual. Together with a colleague, Dr.. Janet Williams, now his wife, he began to work. At a point not widely appreciated, his thoughts on this single issue of homosexuality, caused a broader reconsideration of what is mental illness, about where to draw the line between normal and not.
The new manual, a tome of 567 pages released in 1980, became an unlikely bestseller in both the U.S. and abroad. He instantly set the standard for future psychiatric manuals and raised its main architect, then the next 50 years, the pinnacle of their field.
He was the protector of the book, part director, part ambassador and part clergy intractable, growling over the phone to scientists, journalists and policy makers who considered wrong. He assumed the role as if born to it, colleagues said, helping to bring order to a chaotic corner of science historically.
But power has its own kind of confinement. Spitzer could still disturb the peace, but not over the flanks, as a rebel. Now he was the establishment. And at the end of 90 years, friends said, he remained as restless as ever, eager to challenge the common assumptions.
It was when he came across another group of protesters at the annual meeting of the Psychiatric Association in 1999: the autodescritos ex-gays. As the LGBT demonstrators in 1973, they also felt outraged by psychiatry to be denying their experience, and any therapy that could help.
The reparative therapy
The reparative therapy, sometimes called the therapy "conversion" or "sexual reorientation" is rooted in Freud's idea that people are born bisexual and can move along a continuum from one extreme to another. Some therapists have never abandoned the theory and a major rival in the debate Spitzer 1973, dr. Charles W. Socarides, founded an organization called National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH, its acronym in English), in Southern California, to promote it.
In 1998, NARTH has formed alliances with socially conservative advocacy groups and together they began an aggressive campaign by publishing full-page ads in major newspapers to publicize success stories.
"People with a shared worldview basically got together and created their own group of experts to provide alternative views of politics," said dr. Jack Drescher, a psychiatrist in New York and co-editor of "Ex-Gay Research: Analyzing the Spitzer Study and Its Relation to Science, Religion, Politics, and Culture."
For Spitzer, the scientific question was worth at least be asked: what was the effect of therapy, if there was one? Previous studies were biased and inconclusive.
"People told me at the time: 'Bob, you'll ruin your career, do not do it,'" said Spitzer. "But I did not feel vulnerable."
He recruited 200 men and women, who underwent therapy centers, including Exodus International, based in Florida, and NARTH. He interviewed each one deeply by phone, asking about their sexual impulses, feelings, behaviors before and after therapy, classifying the answers on a scale.
Spitzer then compared the results of your questionnaire before and after therapy. "Most participants reported a change of a predominantly or exclusively homosexual orientation before therapy to a predominantly or exclusively heterosexual orientation last year," concluded his study.
The study, presented at a meeting of psychiatry in 2001, before publication, immediately became a sensation and ex-gay groups have a point to solid evidence of your case. After that Spitzer was the man who single-handedly removed homosexuality from the manual of mental disorders. No one could accuse him of bias.
But LGBT leaders accused him of treason and had their reasons.
The study had serious problems. It is based on what people feel remembered years before a memory-sometimes vague. He included some ex-gay advocates, who were politically active. And no one tested therapy in particular, only half of the participants treated with therapists, while others worked with pastoral counselors or independent groups of Bible study.
Several colleagues tried to stop the study and asked that he not publish it, Spitzer said.
But highly committed after all the work, he resorted to a friend and former colleague, Dr.. Kenneth J. Zucker, chief psychologist of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto, and editor of "Archives of Sexual Behavior," another influential magazine.
"Bob and I knew the quality of their work, and agreed to publish it," Zucker said in an interview last week.
The article did not go through the usual process of peer review in which experts assess the anonymous article before publication.
"But I told him I would only publish the comments too" response from other scientists to follow the study, said Zucker.
These comments, with few exceptions, were merciless. One cited the Nuremberg Code of ethics to condemn the study as not only flawed, but also morally wrong.
"We fear the repercussions of this study, including the increase of suffering, prejudice and discrimination," concluded a group of 15 researchers at the State Psychiatric Institute in New York, which was affiliated Spitzer.
Spitzer did not leave the study implied that being gay was a choice, or that it was possible for anyone who wanted to change to do it with therapy. But this did not prevent socially conservative cite the study in support of these points, second Wayne Besen, executive director of Truth Wins Out, a nonprofit organization that fights prejudice against LGBT people.
On one occasion, a politician of Finland in Parliament presented the study to argue against civil unions, according to Drescher.
"It must be said that when this study was misused for political purposes, to say that gays should be cured, as happened many times. Bob responded immediately to correct the misperceptions, "said Drescher, who is gay.
But Spitzer could not control the way their study was interpreted by each one and could not erase the biggest mistake of all scientific, clearly attacked in many of the comments: just ask people if they have changed is not evidence of real change. People lie to themselves and others. They keep changing their stories to fit their needs and moods.
In short, by almost any measurement, the study failed the test of scientific rigor that Spitzer himself was so important to demand for many years.
"When reading these comments, I knew it was a problem, a big problem and one that I could not answer," said Spitzer. "How do you know that someone has really changed?"
Recognition
It took 11 years for him to acknowledge publicly.
Initially he clung to the idea that the study was exploratory, an attempt to lead scientists to think twice before dropping an expensive therapy. Then he took refuge in the position that the study focused less on the effectiveness of therapy and more on how people treated him describe changes in sexual orientation.
"There is a very interesting question," he said. "But for a long time I thought it might not have to face the biggest problem on the measurement of change."
After retiring in 2003, he remained active on many fronts, but the study of reparative therapy remained an important element of the culture wars and a personal repentance that does not leave him alone. Symptoms of Parkinson's disease worsened last year, the physically and mentally exhausting, making it even harder for him to fight the pangs of remorse.
And one day in March, Spitzer received a visitor. Gabriel Arana, a journalist of the magazine "The American Prospect," Spitzer interviewed about the study on reparative therapy. That was not any interview; Arana underwent reparative therapy in adolescence and young therapist recruited him for the study of Spitzer (Arana did not participate).
"I asked him about all his critics and he said: 'I think they are right,'" said Arana, who wrote about his own experiences in the past month. Arana said reparative therapy ended up postponing their self-acceptance and it led to thoughts of suicide. "But then I was recruited for the study of Spitzer, I was considered a success story. I would have said it was making progress. "
That was what was missing. The study at the time seemed a mere footnote in a great life was turning into one chapter. And I needed a fitting end, a strong correction, directly by its author, not a journalist or colleague.
An outline of the letter had leaked online and was released.
"You know, the only regret I have, the only professional," said Spitzer about the study, near the end of a long interview. "And I think in the history of psychiatry, I do not think you've seen a scientist to write a letter saying that the data were there, but were misinterpreted. Which has admitted it and apologized to his readers. "
He looked away and then came back again with her big eyes full of emotion. "That's something, do not you think?"
