A chefe de diplomacia dos Estados Unidos, Hillary Clinton, ressaltou nesta terça-feira a necessidade de fazer da luta contra a discriminação de lésbicas, gays, bissexuais, travestis e transexuais uma das prioridades da defesa dos direitos humanos no mundo.

"Os direitos dos gays são direitos humanos e os direitos humanos são direitos dos gays", disse Hillary em discurso no Palácio das Nações, sede da ONU em Genebra, por ocasião da comemoração do Dia Internacional dos Direitos Humanos.

A secretária de Estado americana dedicou seu discurso de mais de meia hora para denunciar a discriminação que LGBTs sofrem em muitos países onde não ser heterossexual é um crime.

O discurso de Hillary aconteceu pouco depois que o presidente dos EUA, Barack Obama, aprovou uma medida que estipula que todas as agências da Administração americana devem garantir que a assistência diplomática e a ajuda no exterior promovam e protejam os direitos humanos de LGBTs.

"Fiquemos no lado bom da história, por nossa gente, nossas nações e as gerações futuras", disse a secretária de Estado americana, reconhecendo que sua opinião mudou nas últimas décadas após ter trabalhado com pessoas de orientações sexuais diferentes da sua.

"Todas as pessoas merecem ser tratadas com dignidade, independente de quem são ou de quem amam", declarou Hillary, que anunciou a criação de um Fundo Global para a Igualdade.

Washington pretende que esse fundo conte com respaldo internacional e, para colocá-lo em funcionamento, já investiu US$ 3 milhões.

A secretária de Estado ressaltou que "nunca deveria ser um crime ser gay", como ainda ocorre em muitos Estados, e rejeitou o conceito que a homossexualidade seja um produto ocidental.

"Ser gay não é uma invenção ocidental, é uma realidade humana. Os gays nascem e pertencem a todas as sociedades do mundo", salientou.

Hillary acrescentou que "é uma violação dos direitos humanos quando um Governo declara ilegal ser homossexual, quando as pessoas são espancadas ou assassinadas por sua orientação sexual".

O discurso foi recebido de maneira muito positiva pelos grupos de defesa dos direitos humanos e dos direitos LGBTs.

Paul LeGendre, da organização não-governamental Human Rights First, opinou que as palavras de Hillary provam que, "embora a perseguição dos homossexuais persista em quase todos os cantos do mundo, há um consenso internacional que a proteção dos direitos humanos deve se estender aos abusos gerados pela orientação sexual ou pela identidade sexual das pessoas".

LeGendre lembrou que mais de 70 países ainda criminalizam as relações entre pessoas do mesmo sexo, o que obriga muitas pessoas a se tornarem refugiadas por questões de segurança.
