O Parlamento do Estado australiano de Queensland aprovou uma lei que reconhece as uniões civis das pessoas de mesmo sexo a partir do início do ano que vem, informa nesta quinta-feira a imprensa local.
A lei foi aprovada por 47 votos a favor e 40 contra em uma sessão legislativa, pouco antes de debater a postura dos membros do Partido Trabalhista frente à legalização dos casamentos igualitário no marco de um congresso nacional neste fim de semana.
Além de Queensland, os estados de Victoria, Nova Gales do Sul e Tasmânia e o Território da Capital Australiana (ACT, na sigla em inglês) reconhecem as uniões civis de pessoas do mesmo sexo.
No Parlamento estadual, a premiê de Queensland, Anna Bligh, disse que a lei "busca derrubar os preconceitos e a discriminação", segundo a emissora local "ABC".
Antes, o subchefe do governo de Queensland, Andrew Fraser, havia dito que a união civil de casais do mesmo sexo está de acordo com a Constituição, pois "se trata de um assunto completamente diferente ao casamento".
Os deputados do Partido Trabalhista (governista) debaterão no fim de semana sua postura em relação à legalização dos casamentos igualitários, que sofre oposição da primeira-ministra australiana, Julia Gillard.
Estima-se que, na conferência dos trabalhistas deste fim de semana, o tesoureiro do ACT, Andrew Barr, apresente uma proposta de emenda à lei de casamentos para permitir o matrimônio de todos os casais, sem distinção de sexo. A iniciativa será apoiada pela ministra de Finanças da Austrália, Penny Wong, que se declarou publicamente lésbica.
Na Austrália, uma nação com uma sociedade dividida entre os valores puritanos e os avanços em favor do respeito às minorias sexuais, as pesquisas de opinião indicam que a maioria da população apoia o casamento entre pessoas do mesmo sexo.

The Parliament of the Australian state of Queensland passed a law recognizing civil unions of same-sex couples from the beginning of next year, said on Thursday the local press.

Earlier, the deputy chief of the Queensland Government, Andrew Fraser, said that the civil union of same-sex couples is consistent with the Constitution because "it is a different matter altogether to marriage."
Members of the Labour Party (ruling) on the weekend discuss his stance on the legalization of egalitarian marriages, which is opposed the Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gillard.
