KUALA LUMPUR – A polícia da Malásia proibiu ativistas pelos direitos LGBTs de realizarem um festival anual de artes pela luta contra a discriminação no país. O evento, chamado de "Sexual Independence", é realizado desde 2008 na capital Kuala Lumpur, em circunstâncias discretas. Mesmo assim, a mostra atraiu protestos de líderes religiosos e políticos, incluindo críticas do vice-primeiro-ministro, Muhyiddin Yassin.
Depois que grupos não ligados ao governo também prometeram manifestações contra o evento, a polícia decidiu proibir o festival. O vice-chefe da polícia local, Khalid Abu Bakar, disse nesta quinta-feira que a decisão tem como objetivo prevenir que a mostra cause "desarmonia, inimizade e perturbe a ordem púbica".
Ainda nesta quinta, o vice-primeiro ministro descreveu o evento como "desapropriado" e "uma perda de tempo", de acordo com informações divulgadas pela agência oficial de notícias Bernama. A Malásia, Estado de maioria muçulmana, censura a divulgação de filmes e letras de músicas que promovam a aceitação de lésbicas, gays, bissexuais, travestis e transexuais na sociedade.
O festival "Sexual Independence" iria promover debates, performances musicais e filmes. O evento é apoiado pelo braço da Anistia Internacional na Malásia, principal órgão de luta pelos direitos humanos no país.
