A terapia reparativa
Jack Drescher, psiquiatra em Nova York e coeditor de “Ex-Gay Research: Analyzing the Spitzer Study and Its Relation to Science, Religion, Politics, and Culture”.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The fact was simply that he did everything wrong, and at the end of a long revolutionary career, no matter how often he was right, how powerful was or what it would mean to his legacy.
The dr. Robert L. Spitzer, considered by some as the father of modern psychiatry, who turns 80 this week, recently agreed to 4 am aware that I had to do something that is not natural to him.
He struggled and went stumbling in the dark. His desk seemed impossibly distant, Spitzer suffers from Parkinson's disease and has difficulty walking, sitting and even hold her head up.
The word he sometimes uses to describe these limitations-pathetic-is the same as that used for decades as an ax to attack silly ideas, theories and studies empty worthless.
Now here he was at his computer, ready to recant a study that conducted an investigation of ill-conceived 2003 that supported the use of so-called reparative therapy to "cure" homosexuality, is for people strongly motivated to change.
What to say? The issue of marriage between same sex was shaking again the national policy. The California Legislature was debating a bill prohibiting the therapy as being dangerous. A magazine journalist who underwent therapy in adolescence, recently visited him at his home to explain how miserably was a disorienting experience.
He subsequently learned that a report of the World Health Organization, released on Thursday (17), considers therapy "a serious threat to health and well-being-even life-affected people."
Spitzer's fingers trembled on the keys, not reliable, as if suffocated with words. And then it was done: a brief letter to be published this month in the same journal where the original study appeared.
"I believe I must apologize to the gay community," concludes the text.
Disturbing the peace
The idea of studying the entire reparative therapy was Spitzer, say those who know him, an effort of an orthodoxy that he helped establish.
In the late '90s as today, the psychiatric establishment considered worthless therapy. Few therapists considered homosexuality a disorder.
It was not always so. Until the 70s, the diagnostic manual of the field classified homosexuality as a disease, calling it "sociopathic personality disorder." Many therapists offer treatment, including Freudian analysts who dominated the field at the time.
LGBT activists have objected furiously and, in 1970, one year after the Stonewall protests to stop the raids in a bar in New York, a group of LGBT rights protesters confronted a gathering of behavior therapists in New York to discuss the matter. The meeting was closed, but not before a young professor at Columbia University sit with the protesters to hear their arguments.
"I've always been attracted to controversy and what I heard made sense," Spitzer said in an interview at his home last week. "And I started thinking, well, it is a mental disorder, then what makes it so?"
He likened homosexuality to other conditions, defined as disorders such as depression and alcohol dependence, and saw immediately that caused the last severe distress and damage, while homosexuality is not often.
He also saw an opportunity to do something about it. Spitzer was then a member of a committee of the American Psychiatric Association, which was helping to update the diagnostic manual of the area, and promptly organized a symposium to discuss the place of homosexuality.
The move triggered a series of bitter debate, putting Spitzer against two major influential psychiatrists who do not relent. In the end, the psychiatric association stood by Spitzer in 1973, decided to remove homosexuality from its manual and replace it with the alternative of him, "disorder of sexual orientation" to identify people whose sexual orientation, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transvestite, transsexual or straight, caused them distress.
Despite the arcane language, homosexuality was no longer a "disorder". Spitzer has achieved a breakthrough in civil rights in record time.
"I would not say that Robert Spitzer became a popular name among the broader LGBT movement, but the removal of homosexuality was widely celebrated as a victory," said Ronald Bayer, the Center for History and Ethics of Public Health at Columbia. "'No More Sick" was the headline in some newspapers gay. "
Partly as a result, Spitzer charged with the task of updating the diagnostic manual. Together with a colleague, Dr.. Janet Williams, now his wife, he began to work. At a point not widely appreciated, his thoughts on this single issue of homosexuality, caused a broader reconsideration of what is mental illness, about where to draw the line between normal and not.
The new manual, a tome of 567 pages released in 1980, became an unlikely bestseller in both the U.S. and abroad. He instantly set the standard for future psychiatric manuals and raised its main architect, then the next 50 years, the pinnacle of their field.
He was the protector of the book, part director, part ambassador and part clergy intractable, growling over the phone to scientists, journalists and policy makers who considered wrong. He assumed the role as if born to it, colleagues said, helping to bring order to a chaotic corner of science historically.
But power has its own kind of confinement. Spitzer could still disturb the peace, but not over the flanks, as a rebel. Now he was the establishment. And at the end of 90 years, friends said, he remained as restless as ever, eager to challenge the common assumptions.
It was when he came across another group of protesters at the annual meeting of the Psychiatric Association in 1999: the autodescritos ex-gays. As the LGBT demonstrators in 1973, they also felt outraged by psychiatry to be denying their experience, and any therapy that could help.
The reparative therapy
The reparative therapy, sometimes called the therapy "conversion" or "sexual reorientation" is rooted in Freud's idea that people are born bisexual and can move along a continuum from one extreme to another. Some therapists have never abandoned the theory and a major rival in the debate Spitzer 1973, dr. Charles W. Socarides, founded an organization called National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH, its acronym in English), in Southern California, to promote it.
In 1998, NARTH has formed alliances with socially conservative advocacy groups and together they began an aggressive campaign by publishing full-page ads in major newspapers to publicize success stories.
"People with a shared worldview basically got together and created their own group of experts to provide alternative views of politics," said dr. Jack Drescher, a psychiatrist in New York and co-editor of "Ex-Gay Research: Analyzing the Spitzer Study and Its Relation to Science, Religion, Politics, and Culture."
For Spitzer, the scientific question was worth at least be asked: what was the effect of therapy, if there was one? Previous studies were biased and inconclusive.
"People told me at the time: 'Bob, you'll ruin your career, do not do it,'" said Spitzer. "But I did not feel vulnerable."
He recruited 200 men and women, who underwent therapy centers, including Exodus International, based in Florida, and NARTH. He interviewed each one deeply by phone, asking about their sexual impulses, feelings, behaviors before and after therapy, classifying the answers on a scale.
Spitzer then compared the results of your questionnaire before and after therapy. "Most participants reported a change of a predominantly or exclusively homosexual orientation before therapy to a predominantly or exclusively heterosexual orientation last year," concluded his study.
The study, presented at a meeting of psychiatry in 2001, before publication, immediately became a sensation and ex-gay groups have a point to solid evidence of your case. After that Spitzer was the man who single-handedly removed homosexuality from the manual of mental disorders. No one could accuse him of bias.
But LGBT leaders accused him of treason and had their reasons.
The study had serious problems. It is based on what people feel remembered years before a memory-sometimes vague. He included some ex-gay advocates, who were politically active. And no one tested therapy in particular, only half of the participants treated with therapists, while others worked with pastoral counselors or independent groups of Bible study.
Several colleagues tried to stop the study and asked that he not publish it, Spitzer said.
But highly committed after all the work, he resorted to a friend and former colleague, Dr.. Kenneth J. Zucker, chief psychologist of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto, and editor of "Archives of Sexual Behavior," another influential magazine.
"Bob and I knew the quality of their work, and agreed to publish it," Zucker said in an interview last week.
The article did not go through the usual process of peer review in which experts assess the anonymous article before publication.
"But I told him I would only publish the comments too" response from other scientists to follow the study, said Zucker.
These comments, with few exceptions, were merciless. One cited the Nuremberg Code of ethics to condemn the study as not only flawed, but also morally wrong.
"We fear the repercussions of this study, including the increase of suffering, prejudice and discrimination," concluded a group of 15 researchers at the State Psychiatric Institute in New York, which was affiliated Spitzer.
Spitzer did not leave the study implied that being gay was a choice, or that it was possible for anyone who wanted to change to do it with therapy. But this did not prevent socially conservative cite the study in support of these points, second Wayne Besen, executive director of Truth Wins Out, a nonprofit organization that fights prejudice against LGBT people.
On one occasion, a politician of Finland in Parliament presented the study to argue against civil unions, according to Drescher.
"It must be said that when this study was misused for political purposes, to say that gays should be cured, as happened many times. Bob responded immediately to correct the misperceptions, "said Drescher, who is gay.
But Spitzer could not control the way their study was interpreted by each one and could not erase the biggest mistake of all scientific, clearly attacked in many of the comments: just ask people if they have changed is not evidence of real change. People lie to themselves and others. They keep changing their stories to fit their needs and moods.
In short, by almost any measurement, the study failed the test of scientific rigor that Spitzer himself was so important to demand for many years.
"When reading these comments, I knew it was a problem, a big problem and one that I could not answer," said Spitzer. "How do you know that someone has really changed?"
Recognition
It took 11 years for him to acknowledge publicly.
Initially he clung to the idea that the study was exploratory, an attempt to lead scientists to think twice before dropping an expensive therapy. Then he took refuge in the position that the study focused less on the effectiveness of therapy and more on how people treated him describe changes in sexual orientation.
"There is a very interesting question," he said. "But for a long time I thought it might not have to face the biggest problem on the measurement of change."
After retiring in 2003, he remained active on many fronts, but the study of reparative therapy remained an important element of the culture wars and a personal repentance that does not leave him alone. Symptoms of Parkinson's disease worsened last year, the physically and mentally exhausting, making it even harder for him to fight the pangs of remorse.
And one day in March, Spitzer received a visitor. Gabriel Arana, a journalist of the magazine "The American Prospect," Spitzer interviewed about the study on reparative therapy. That was not any interview; Arana underwent reparative therapy in adolescence and young therapist recruited him for the study of Spitzer (Arana did not participate).
"I asked him about all his critics and he said: 'I think they are right,'" said Arana, who wrote about his own experiences in the past month. Arana said reparative therapy ended up postponing their self-acceptance and it led to thoughts of suicide. "But then I was recruited for the study of Spitzer, I was considered a success story. I would have said it was making progress. "
That was what was missing. The study at the time seemed a mere footnote in a great life was turning into one chapter. And I needed a fitting end, a strong correction, directly by its author, not a journalist or colleague.
An outline of the letter had leaked online and was released.
"You know, the only regret I have, the only professional," said Spitzer about the study, near the end of a long interview. "And I think in the history of psychiatry, I do not think you've seen a scientist to write a letter saying that the data were there, but were misinterpreted. Which has admitted it and apologized to his readers. "
He looked away and then came back again with her big eyes full of emotion. "That's something, do not you think?"

TV brasileira ganha primeira repórter transexual em programa feminino ( Noticia ) - Brazilian TV reporter wins first transsexual on women's program (News)
O diretor do programa, Riccó, assistiu alguma entrevista e me achou articulada e desenvolta. Acho que me sai bem, pois a produção elogiou bastante. Sinto que nasci pra isso, amo me comunicar, amo televisão.
Quais pautas você irá abordar no programa?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For the first time in the history of Brazilian television reporter became a transsexual in a program for women. Women in the program (TV Gazeta), model Carol Marra mining stood out in a frame and was invited to develop special reports on culture, cuisine and of course fashion.
Formed in journalism, Carol was discovered at Fashion Rio 2011, was immediately hired by the agency Wool Agency, participated in several parades and now it says performed with the opportunity on TV. "The invitation came by my talent and training, not my sexual condition," defends the top, that do not spread stereotypes.
In an interview with E +, she reveals details of his pioneering.
After a year of modeling, say goodbye to a career on the runways by presenting career?
I never planned to be a model, it happened by chance and embraced the profession with care and dedication. But, unlike other models, I started late in the profession. I have over 17 years. So I want to seize opportunities, and when you give up, devote myself to other things without leaving the runway.
How did the invitation to be a special correspondent of TVGazeta?
The program director Riccó, watched some interviews and find me articulate and agile. When I heard that I was a journalist, he was invited to the table "Reporter For a Day." It turned out that I have already presented five subjects for the program (laughs). I think I do well, because the production praised enough. I was born for it, I love to communicate, I love television.
What guidelines will you address in the program?
At first, I'm a special reporter, do patterns of behavior and culture, but I have nothing definite. I made the cover of the premiere of the musical Tim Maia, the exhibition of Marilyn Monroe, matters of gastronomy and the Minas Trend Preview, which is the first fashion week in the fashion calendar in Brazil. I have ideas of a fixed frame. It is a project that will provide the direction of the program.
The program is called Women. That leaves you flattered?
I feel flattered by the invitation, because I know that I am competent and capable, not for being transgender. I think the station's call came for my talent and training, not my sexual condition. A woman is not about genitalia. Being a woman is something great, is in the soul, is to have a special sensitivity.
Have watched the women before?
I watch Katie Fonseca (host of the show) since I was a child in the program Note & Record, the Record. I loved the craft classes, I have done some mischief at home. I like these women's programs, although not much time to watch because of the modeling career.
With so many presenters, what do you think of Katie?
She is an amazing person, a sensitivity and joy that is contagious. I spent an afternoon in the studio and it's amazing power to communicate it, that does not use TP (telemprompter, a device that reads the presenter in front of the cameras). It is people like us, no frills, why is so loved and respected.
As viewers face a reporter transsexual?
Oddly enough, I get a lot of affection in public. Only messages of encouragement and praise. Increasingly realize that housewives, mothers I respect and admire my work. It's amazing, where I thought would have a barrier and prejudice, not found. This is serious for my professional conduct. Do not wanna be a reporter buffoonish caricature. I want to show content, lightly, without being pedantic.

Filha de Raúl Castro lidera Parada LGBT em dia de luta contra homofobia ( Noticia ) - Daughter of Raúl Castro leads Day Parade LGBT in the fight against homophobia (News)

Discriminação e violência contra LGBTs persiste no mundo ( Noticia ) - Discrimination and violence against LGBT people persists in the world (News)

On the occasion of International Day Against Homophobia, the organizations that defend the rights of sexual minorities warning on Thursday about the persistence of discrimination and violence against lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transvestites and transsexuals in the world, sexual orientation is illegal in 78 countries and punishable by death in five. The International Association of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex Association (ILGA) in Geneva this week released a report on the status of homosexuality reveals that ten countries allow marriage between same sex and 12 permit the adoption of children by Couples.
Iran, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Mauritania and Sudan punish homosexuality with death penalty, which also occurs in some regions of northern Nigeria and southern Somalia.
Europe is the region where LGBT rights are most frequently seen in Latin America the biggest problem is violence - for most countries does not have legislation outlawing homophobia - while half of Asian countries still criminalize homosexuality.
In the United States, where activists considered a breakthrough the recent announcement of President Barack Obama in favor of marriage between same sex, were called acts of protest. The Obama support equal marriage debate led to the center of the election campaign in the country, since its likely Republican rival, Mitt Romney, opposes marriage between same sex.
In Cuba, the Day Against Homophobia remember with acts that began on Nov. 8 with academic, educational, artistic and public events and the now traditional 'conga' against homophobia conducted on the streets of Havana on Saturday.
The initiative is promoted since 2007 by the National Center for Sex Education (CENESEX), headed by Mariela Castro, daughter of Cuban President Raul Castro, as part of its campaign to raise awareness on the respect for sexual diversity.
The Society of Gay and Lesbian Integration Argentina (Acronym) will manifest itself in front of the Ministry of Education in Buenos Aires, while other groups such as the Homosexual Community of Argentina (CHA) will support school guides - Argentina was the first American country to allow marriage between persons of the same sex in 2010.

Among the events planned in the German capital, is a marathon kissing 'Kiss. In' under the theme 'Homophobia, a danger to our youth. Against the trivialization of violence against homosexuals and transsexuals'.

Veja como sobrepor a t-shirt à manga comprida ( Noticia ) - Here's how to override the t-shirt with long sleeves (News)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the fall, while the weather still does not ask for heavy coats, overlays shirts and long sleeve knits are commonly seen on the streets. Usually white or black, long-sleeved blouses are wild and may include practical and informal looks. The combination is more suitable for younger people, each with up to 25 years of age. It seems easy, the combination can be disastrous if some items are not observed, as a contrast color and trim of two parts.
Combinations to be avoided:
The long-sleeved shirt should always be fairer than the t-shirt. The piece need not be glued to the body, but low tissue can not tangle in the trunk or under the sleeve shorter. Avoid choosing shirts with very different and contrasting colors. Black and white or black and white does not always work. In these cases, the arms may appear casts. Nor is it a good idea to make a "tone on tone" with color. The more saturated parts can easily be combined with other non-contrasting neutral, such as gray. T-shirts printed long meshes ask the same tone or at least with one of the tones of the print. This way, it is not harmonic.

Obama declara apoio a casamento entre pessoas do mesmo sexo ( Noticia ) - Obama declares support for marriage between same-sex (News)

The U.S. president, Barack Obama announced on Wednesday (9) that supports marriage between same sex after a long period without proncunciar clearly on the subject of favorable statements and Vice President Joe Biden.
In an interview with U.S. broadcaster ABC, the president described his position as an "evolution" based on conversations with members of his team, openly LGBT officials and even with his wife and daughters.
"I must say that over the years I've been talking with friends, family and neighbors, and when I think about my own team members who are in monogamous homosexual relationships, who are raising children together, when I think of soldiers, pilots, marines or sailors who are fighting on our behalf and still feel uncomfortable, even now when the Do not Ask Do not Tell [policy prohibiting persons taken in the military] does not exist, because they can not take their relationships, I get to conclusion that for me personally is important to follow and say that same-sex couples should be allowed to marry, "the president said in an interview on" Good Morning America. "
Obama emphasized that this is his personal position, and still supports the idea that every American state set its own law. But he said he is confident that Americans are increasingly supportive of couples of the same sex, citing her own daughters.

The U.S. president, Barack Obama announced on Wednesday (9) that supports marriage between same sex after a long period without proncunciar clearly on the subject of favorable statements and Vice President Joe Biden.

Campanha tenta revogar emenda que proíbe casamento igualitário na Carolina do Norte ( Noticia ) - Campaign tries to withdraw amendment banning equal marriage in North Carolina (News)

Charlotte (USA) - A request to withdraw the amendment to the Constitution of North Carolina which prohibits marriage between same sex, approved yesterday by the voters, began circulating on Wednesday.
Less than 24 hours after the approval of the amendment, more than 71,000 people had signed the application '1 million against Amendment 1 ', which circulates through the social networking platform' change.org ', created by Jenn Halweil, a resident of Raleigh , the state capital.
The measure received 61% support of more than two million voters who participated in the state primary election, a turnout significantly compared to 2008.
Although North Carolina prohibits marriage between same-sex couples since 1996, the promoters of the amendment argued the need for a clear definition of marriage in the state Constitution.
For their part, opponents emphasized that the measure ignores the civil unions of couples, including heterosexual, and jeopardizes the protection of some domestic violence victims and their minor children.
"Numerous laws have been repealed by the courage of the communities that these measures were able to fight unjust ', says the request.
It is estimated that over 212,000 couples are not legally married in North Carolina, but enjoys the benefit of their domestic relations, such as medical insurance.
Although their legal ramifications are still unknown, the measurement should begin to be applied on 1 January 2013.

The spokesman on national security pre-republano presidential candidate Mitt Romney resigned on Tuesday after his critics questioned his conservatism because it is homosexual.A few days after being hired in late April, Richard Grenell said it decided to leave the Romney campaign team.
Grenell, who is openly gay, previously worked with the neoconservative and former U.S. ambassador to the UN John Bolton, as well as other employees of radical tendencies in foreign policy.
"My ability to speak clearly and convincingly on the subject has been considerably diminished by the discussion of personal issues that sometimes come from the presidential campaign," Grenell said in a statement.
The Romney campaign manager, Matt Rhoades, said the team felt disappointed by the decision and Grenell said he had merits superior to the position he was hired.
Many detractors have suggested that the right sexual orientation Grenell represent problems for the Romney campaign.
The candidate, who leads the electoral preferences, has had to cede the religious sector of the Republican Party with changes in its position on social issues like abortion.

Projeto de petista pode interferir em decisão do STF sobre união homoafetiva ( Noticia ) - PT Project may interfere with the Supreme Court decision on marriage homoafetiva (News)

Congressman Fonteles Nazarene (PT), told the Journal of Piaui this Tuesday (1), reiterated its position that the judiciary would be replacing the role of the legislature. The congressman has a Constitutional Amendment Proposal (PEC) under consideration in the debate on Constitution and Justice Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, which aims to prevent that from happening.
In practice, if the proposal is accepted, the Supreme Court decisions that regulated such matters as abortion of anencephalic homoafetiva and the union, would be in check.
Fonteles states that in these cases - and others - just beyond the judiciary's role defined in the constitution. "The Constitution gives Congress the power to legislate. It is entirely up to him to preserve its regulations. No one can leave the Supreme own the interpretation of the Law If this happens, we will live in the hands of half a dozen people and legal uncertainty, "he explains.
The deputy says the Supreme just interfering in decisions that fit exclusively to Congress. "The abortion of anencephalic is not provided either in law or the constitution. Judge Nowhere has the power to decide about it. If he is against the Congress, is against the people whose representatives parliamentarians. The ultimate has to be submitted to the people. We can not allow the judiciary to be legislating, "he says.

Polícia russa prende 17 manifestantes por direitos LGBTs ( Noticia ) - Russian police arrest 17 demonstrators for LGBT rights (News)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PETERSBURG, May 1 (Reuters) - Russian police detained at least 17 demonstrators for LGBT rights during the celebrations of May 1 in St. Petersburg on Tuesday, said a human rights group.
The arrests follow the adoption of a law by the city authorities to impose penalties for spreading "propaganda" positive LGBT between the smaller, European diplomats said that lack of clarity and allow plenty of room for interpretation by the police.
Russian lawmakers are considering similar legislation across the country.
Svetlana Barsukova, a member of the LGBT group "Coming Out", St. Petersburg, said that several groups of LGBT rights activists had been arrested in different parts of the city after carrying rainbow flags.
Parades on May 1 in Russia are used by various activist groups as a platform to defend his cause. Homosexuality, punishable by imprisonment in the Soviet Union, was decriminalized in Russia in 1993, but much of the LGBT community remains under pressure 'antigay'.

Jerusalém: o desafio de ser LGBT na cidade 'sagrada' ( Noticia ) - Jerusalem: the challenge of being LGBT in the city 'sacred' (News)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
While assembling a plurality of beliefs and lifestyles, intolerance against lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transvestites and transsexuals is still great.A land of contrasts. While Jerusalem is considered holy by three faiths - Christianity, Judaism and Islam - and brings together symbols and people so different, it is also meandering ground for the manifestation of civil rights. The city hosts a vibrant LGBT community, but it is often more conservative target of layers.
In Jerusalem, there is only one bar to the public and the realization of the LGBT Pride Parade was a right won after much effort. She met four thousand people in 2011, which required the approval of legislation that protects LGBT people in Israel. Indignant at the parade, groups of Orthodox Jews protested in various parts of the city, controlled by a thousand policemen scattered Jerusalem - some even attacking the participants. In June of that year, the march in Tel Aviv managed to gather 70,000 people.
"Although there are many gay and in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem every year attracts thousands of gay activists to join the march, to show that even in the religious consider 'dirty', this is our town too," said AS a member the LGBT community in the city.
Despite many death threats they receive year after year during the parade, the annual event excels more in terms of assistance and organization. "The difference between our annual march and Tel Aviv and other parts of the world is that in Jerusalem, also becomes a means to fight for our rights and the hatred that the vast majority of the population of Jerusalem has for us," adds Natalie V., a Belgian who arrived in Jerusalem five years ago.
Natalie, who for five years dating an Israeli woman, is proof of the duality of the state of Israel in relation to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender. Although Israel is a democratic country, Orthodox Judaism interferes with many civil affairs, including weddings. In Israel, it is impossible to perform a civil marriage, even among heterosexuals. However, a distortion, the joints are allowed homoafetivas, even if one is foreign, such as Natalie.
"It is curious that this is possible in a country where both the dominant religion. I want to make it clear that Jerusalem and Israel, until now, had no problem by holding hands with my girlfriend, or by giving a kiss, "he says. "However, working with an Orthodox Jewish family and not say anything about my sexual orientation in nearly four years," says Natalie.
Ultra-Orthodox walking next to a Muslim woman wearing the veil and a girl in a miniskirt behind scenes are common on the streets of Jerusalem. And it is this heterogeneity that, in the end, lies a kind of tacit non-aggression. Although, sometimes, this bubble can burst, as happened during the LGBT Pride Parade 2005, when an ultra-Orthodox Jew stabbed several participants. Worst attack happened to the LGBT community in Tel Aviv, when a bomb killed two people and wounded one. The culprit, a settler in the West Bank, said that LGBT people are "animals".
Therefore, despite the apparently smooth blend between religious and secular in Jerusalem, as well as the rest of the country, a voltage pulses buried below the surface. "Here, in general, as gays do not carry a sign saying 'I'm gay, there are so many problems, but you're not going to kiss another man in Mea Shearim (ultra-Orthodox neighborhood) do not want to provoke them into your neighborhood, "says Adam.
According to him, but the rest of the city belongs to everyone. Mikve The bar, formerly known as Shushan, Shushan on the street, was the first targeted toward LGBT to be opened in the city. The place is experiencing a new golden age after remaining closed for many years due to the pressures of the orthodox. Throughout the week there are parties for clients and Mondays are exclusive of drag queens.
"In Jerusalem, there are not many places to dance or party, so always appear heterosexual. In town, we all know and friends of all sexual orientations join us. We're mixed, "he says with a smile Daniel R., businessman.
The company in charge of organizing the parties, Unibra, ensures that it is a success, attracting dozens of people all week, although the parties drag are preferred. "People want to have fun, are tired of hiding, but unfortunately in this town there are places where to go out at night," laments the Unibra.
Palestinians
For members of the Palestinian LGBT community the challenges are even greater. "For them it is more difficult, because it comes from a more conservative society, where homosexuality is punished or humiliated in public. So the last thing they want is to make a public statement that they are gay, male or female, "says Adam.
The organization for LGBT Palestinians in Israel Al QAWS organizes events for the Palestinians and help create a network of support and awareness among the Arab community. Once a month they organize a party for LGBT Palestinians living in Israel can meet.
"Even if the Palestinians living in Israel are provided with the same rights as Jewish citizens, there is often misunderstanding and racism in relation to gay Palestinians," said a spokesman for Al QAWS. "There is also much misunderstanding on the part of the international community, which focuses on the Israeli occupation. Moreover, the opinion of the Palestinian community weighs too much. Thus, we can not expect them to leave the cabinet and the West. "
Sometimes, Israel comes to accept Palestinian refugees as LGBT people at risk of death or who have received threats, although it is not something so common. Meanwhile, in Jerusalem, continues to fight for the religious community accepts lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transvestites and transsexuals, if not as equals, as citizens with equal rights for all.
"This is our goal. We want neither more nor less than others and are able to walk quietly hand in hand, without fear that make us feel inferior, nor have our Gay Pride Parade surrounded by hundreds of police, "says Adam.
To show that, although not always come to light, the hatred against LGBT runs rampant in Jerusalem in 2006 was the homophobia that brought together representatives of the three monotheistic religions to protest against the LGBT Pride Parade that year. "It's a shame. They could have joined to protest against other more important things, "Adam laments.

Padre espanhol prega 'cura' de LGBTs após divulgar depoimentos de 'ex-gays' ( Noticia ) - Spanish priest preaches' cure 'for LGBT after publishing testimonies of "ex-gay' (News)
