A cidade espanhola de Madri foi escolhida para ser sede da convenção mundial da International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association (Iglta), que será realizada em 2014.

Segundo a entidade, a capital foi eleita por sua personalidade aberta e integradora. A cidade venceu Estocolmo, Zurique e Cannes, que eram candidatas a sede do encontro. O apoio da prefeitura de Madrid e os atrativos turísticos da metrópole foram essenciais para a escolha do local.

O delegado de Economia, Emprego e Participação Cidadã de Madri, Miguel Ángel Villanueva, mostrou-se satisfeito pela convenção, a primeira desse tipo a ser realizada na Espanha. "O encontro vai contribuir para a consolidação de Madri entre os principais destinos do mundo para o segmento LGTB".

A candidatura madrilenha contou também com a colaboração de associações de defesa dos direitos LGBT, ONGs, câmaras de comércio, empresários, escolas de negócios e empresas privadas.

O anúncio da escolha de Madri como sede da 31ª convenção mundial da International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association foi feito há alguns dias em Florianópolis, em Santa Catarina, durante sua reunião anual.

O secretário-geral de Turismo e Comércio Interior, Joan Mesquida ressaltou a importância que a convenção terá para Madri. Pesquida indicou que a Espanha é "um país único no mundo" por ter seis destinos LGBT: Madri, Barcelona, Ibiza, Sitges, Grande Canária e Torremolinos, que têm grande peso no setor, já que representam 10% do turismo que recebe o país.

Madri é uma das referencias mundiais da comunidade. A cidade tem até um bairro gay, Chueca, e uma das principais paradas LGTB do mundo. A prefeitura da cidade destaca também sua oferta hoteleira, seus atrativos culturais e suas opções de lazer e gastronomia.

A Iglta conta com mais de cinco mil empresas e instituições associadas em 160 países e é a única entidade LGBT do mundo que pertence a Organização Mundial do Comércio (OMT).
