Maebe A. Girl faz suas campanhas pelas ruas de Los Angeles com perucas e figurinos coloridos e extravagantes, mas não quer ser tratada como uma piada: a drag queen está concorrendo para o Congresso dos Estados Unidos.“Demorou para as pessoas me levarem a sério, entenderem que não estou fazendo isso só para aparecer, mas como uma declaração. Estou fazendo isso para participar de uma eleição e vencer”, conta Maebe, em entrevista à “People”.
“É claro que poderia concorrer sem estar em drag. Mas eu escolhi estar em drag porque minha voz ganha mais força. As pessoas não conseguem te ignorar. A ironia nisso tudo é que, para a sociedade, nós somos completamente ignorados”, opina.
A representatividade LGBTQI+ no governo foi o que motivou Maebe a anunciar em junho que concorreria contra o democrata Adam Schiff pela cadeira do 28º distrito da Califórnia na Câmara dos Representantes.
Maebe afirma não ter nada contra Adam Schiff, mas acredita que ele não é o melhor representante para um distrito com áreas como West Hollywood e Burbank. “Nós LGBTQIs merecemos representatividade como qualquer outra pessoa. Representatividade real. Isso significa ter membros da comunidade na política e não somente aliados”, pondera.
Maebe se identifica como gênero fluido e revela que começar a fazer drag há cinco anos a fez entender melhor sua identidade de gênero. “Eu comecei a entender como eu gostava de estar em drag e como aquilo não era só uma fantasia. Era uma extensão natural de mim”, conta.
Se eleita, uma das grandes preocupações de Maebe será o cuidado com a população de rua. Em Burbank, o número de desabrigados subiu 40% nos últimos anos, chegando a um total de 286 pessoas vivendo nas ruas. Maebe pretende criar casas mais financeiramente acessíveis, além de prover recursos para o tratamento de vícios e saúde mental da população. “Eles são como eu e você”, defende.
“Com a minha eleição, quero ajudar a unir as minorias e mostrar que se ficarmos juntos, podemos conquistar muitas coisas. Recebo várias mensagens de pessoas que dizem se inspirar em mim e é isso que me dá força para continuar. Quero mostrar aos jovens LGBTQI+ que eles são tão importantes que se quiserem concorrer ao Congresso, eles podem. E podem vencer também”, conclui Maebe.

“It took a long time for people to take me seriously, to understand that I'm not doing this just to show up, but as a statement. I'm doing this to participate in an election and win, ”says Maebe, in an interview with“ People ”.
“Of course, I could run without being in drag. But I chose to be in drag because my voice gains more strength. People can't ignore you. The irony in all this is that, for society, we are completely ignored ”, he says.
LGBTQI + representation in the government was what prompted Maebe to announce in June that he would run against Democrat Adam Schiff for the chair of the 28th district of California in the House of Representatives.
Maebe claims to have nothing against Adam Schiff, but believes he is not the best representative for a district with areas like West Hollywood and Burbank. “We LGBTQIs deserve representation just like anyone else. Real representativeness. This means having community members in politics and not just allies ”, he ponders.
Maebe identifies herself as a fluid gender and reveals that starting to drag five years ago made her understand her gender identity better. “I started to understand how I liked being in drag and how it wasn't just a fantasy. It was a natural extension of me, ”he says.
If elected, one of Maebe's major concerns will be caring for the homeless. In Burbank, the number of homeless has risen by 40% in recent years, reaching a total of 286 people living on the streets. Maebe intends to create more affordable homes, in addition to providing resources for the treatment of addictions and mental health of the population. "They are like you and me", he defends.
“With my election, I want to help bring minorities together and show that if we stay together, we can achieve many things. I get a lot of messages from people who say they get inspired by me and that's what gives me the strength to continue. I want to show LGBTQI + young people that they are so important that if they want to run for Congress, they can. And they can win too ”, concludes Maebe.
