O corpo de Anthony Stubbs, um adolescente de 16 anos de Leyland, em Lancashire (Condado ao noroeste da Inglaterra) e pai de um bebê de 4 meses, foi encontrado na floresta pendurado em uma árvore ao lado de um bilhete de suicídio. Segundo a mãe do jovem, ele se matou em meados de novembro por causa do assédio homofóbico que vinha sofrendo há dois anos.
Essa é mais uma daquelas histórias que nos deixam um gosto amargo na boca. Apenas alguns dias atrás informado a morte de Jadin Bell de 15 anos de idade. Anthony desapareceu em novembro passado, depois de passar o dia com sua namorada, Charlotte Mason, 18 anos, e sua filha Lily, na época com apenas dois meses de idade. Em novembro o jovem entrou em uma floresta de Lancashire e se enforcou deixando um bilhete de suicídio. Seu corpo foi encontrado em 14 de janeiro.
Segundo sua mãe, Denise Machin, "Anthony sofreu bullyin de alguns meninos por dois anos. (...) Eles gritavam 'menino gay', chegaram a lhe dar um tapa, rasgar suas roupas e até mesmo roubar seu telefone. (...) Eu fui falar com seus professores, mas Anthony me implorou para não intervir, porque ele estava envergonhado." Machin disse que as coisas melhoraram quando nasceu a filha do jovem casal. "Ele e Charlotte pareciam tão apaixonados, eu pensei que talvez ele tivesse acabado de passar por uma fase difícil e tinha assimilado a sua sexualidade. Ele estava indo tão bem na classe e planejava ir para a faculdade. Ele queria ter um bom trabalho e fazer tudo o que podia para Lily e Charlotte."
A mãe sempre suspeitou que Anthony fosse gay, mas apenas reuniu coragem de lhe dizer que não havia problema quando o filho estava prestes a se tornar pai. "Ele gritou que não era gay e que amava Charlotte, mas logo confessou que talvez fosse bissexual", disse a mãe. Quando ele desapareceu, sua mãe e sua namorada enviaram uma mensagem de texto para um número suspeito que encontraram no celular do jovem, e receberam uma resposta com conteúdo sexualmente explícito de alguém do sexo masculino. As duas pensaram que Anthony tinha ido fazer uma "experiência" e tentar encontrar a si mesmo. "Eu acho que era difícil para ele saber o que fazer com sua atração pelo mesmo sexo", disse a mãe. "Eu acho que foi demais para ele. Assimilar esses sentimentos, ser pai e se portar bem com Charlotte. [...] Eu acho que deveria haver alguém nas escolas para ajudar os adolescentes que podem estar passando por um momento confuso assim."
Seu pai, Tony, de 37 anos, disse: "Estamos todos inconsoláveis. Anthony era um rapaz maravilhoso que tinha toda a vida pela frente. Toda a família está arrasada - estamos todos em pedaços. Eu estou lutando para entender tudo isso. Estou muito devastado porque ele se foi."
No bilhete de suicídio não se refere diretamente ao assédio moral, mas há indícios do que estava na mente de Anthony. A mãe revela: "No bilhete, ele disse que eu nunca deveria deixar ninguém passar por cima de mim". Para seu irmão mais novo, Oscar, Anthony disse que o amava, que ele deveria crescer para ser um "rapaz duro" e que ele poderia ficar com seu Xbox.
Para a mãe, Denise, o padrasto Paul, a irmã Jody, o irmão mais novo, Oscar, a filha e a namorada Lily Charlotte, Anthony deixou a seguinte mensagem: "Bem, eu vou embora, mas não completamente. Eu estarei cuidando de vocês e tenham a certeza que os ajudarei a fazer as escolhas certas. E não se esqueça de mim, eu estou no céu olhando para baixo.
